Queensland Real Estate CPD Is Now Mandatory — Here’s What You Actually Need to Know

If you hold a real estate licence or registration certificate in Queensland, continuing professional development is no longer optional. From 6 June 2025, mandatory CPD applies to every licence and registration holder so agents, property managers, auctioneers, business brokers, buyers agents, and resident letting agents alike.

I know change can feel overwhelming, especially when you’re already juggling a busy workload. So let me break this down simply, because it’s actually not as complicated as it sounds.

WHAT DO YOU NEED TO COMPLETE?

Every CPD year, you must complete two approved CPD sessions — Either 2 Type one sessions or one Type 1 and one Type 2. Each session runs for approximately two to three hours. That’s it. Four to six hours of structured learning per year to keep your licence current and your knowledge sharp.

– Type 1 sessions are linked to nationally accredited qualifications and focus on technical competencies

– Type 2 sessions focus on communication, ethics, business skills and consumer protection

– Both types must be from an Office of Fair Trading (OFT) approved provider

Important: Your CPD year is not the same as the calendar year. It runs from the anniversary date of when your licence or registration was first issued. So your start date is personal to you. Check your licence certificate if you’re unsure.

WHAT ABOUT NEW LICENSEES?

If your licence was issued less than twelve months ago, you’re exempt from CPD for your first year. Your obligations begin on the first anniversary of your licence issue date. A good time to start planning ahead, not a reason to put it off entirely.

WHAT PROOF DO YOU NEED TO KEEP?

Once you complete a session, your CPD provider must give you a certificate or statement of attainment. Hold onto it , you’re required to keep proof of completion for five years and produce it to the OFT on request. Don’t lose it in a download folder.

WHY THIS MATTERS BEYOND JUST TICKING A BOX

As someone who operates as both an RTO and a practising buyer’s agent, I’ve had to think about my own CPD obligations too. And my view is this: the agents who treat CPD as a genuine opportunity to stay current are the ones who will stand out in a market that’s changing fast. AML legislation, new disclosure obligations, technology shifts, there’s so much to stay across.

The industry has needed this for a long time. CPD lifts the standard for everyone, and it protects consumers. That’s good for the profession’s reputation, and ultimately good for your business.
